I want to start off by mentioning that during our preflight inspection for this mission we were very pleasantly surprised by our good friend Karen Culpepper as she dropped by our hanger with home made peanut butter cookies for us! Karen is also a pilot and her husband Jimmy works at the airport seeing to our many needs such as fuel when we need it. Karen has spoiled us with her great cookies before…… what a way to start a day of flying! (Thank You So Much Karen!)
On this flight of June 5th, 2018 we departed home base Luray for a very short VFR flight over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Orange VA to pick up our passenger Kaylee, and her dad Jermaine. Total flight time over to Orange was 19 minutes covering 36 nautical miles. Flight conditions were clear with calm winds and a very smooth ride.
Kaylee and her dad were waiting for us in the FBO at Orange and as we walked in we were greeted by Kaylees big beautiful smile! After our greetings we loaded up for our flight to Toms River NJ…… Kaylee was going for appointments at Boston Shriners Hospital in Boston MA and our part of the mission would link her and her dad up with Angel Flight Pilot Andy Anderson at Toms River, from there Andy would continue them onto Boston. Kaylee had indicated that she likes to fly and that she and her dad had made this trip many times before.
Our flight up to Toms River NJ started off with very smooth conditions along with a nice little tailwind, but as we headed thru Delaware towards New Jersey the air became a little choppy and by the time we arrived at Toms River we were getting some fairly good turbulence, causing the nice nap that Kaylee and her dad were having to come to an end. The view on our flights that route us in this direction are always quite good (as long as we are not in or above the clouds) due to the fact that we fly over and around a lot of water which includes the Chesapeake Bay.
At Toms River (Ocean County Airport) we made a visual approach and landed on runway 24. As we taxied in and came to a stop, we were met and greeted by Andy (Kaylee’s Pilot to Boston)… Andy had flown Kaylee and her dad many times before. Inside we gave our goodbyes, exchanged hugs and took some pictures, then after taking on some fuel we loaded back up on 49bravo and headed for home. Our flight time from Orange VA to Toms River was 1:45 minutes covering 229 nautical miles over 4 States.
Our entire flight home consisted of considerable turbulence, but that made no difference when it came time to activate our “I.A.P.” (a very important phase of most of our flights) ……. In Air Picnic (Lunch)!
Back at home base Luray, we made a visual approach (still with considerable turbulence) and landed on runway 22 with a pretty good, gusting crosswind. As we were heading towards the hanger we could not keep from thinking about how good our coffee was going to be along with the home made peanut butter cookies that our good friend Karen had made for us…. needless to say, many of them disappeared fairly quickly….. thanks again so much Karen for such a nice treat! There are many things that can get a Pilot’s attention quickly, but two that really come to my mind are someone saying either “Lets Go Fly” or “I Have Cookies”!
After enjoying our Coffee and Cookies we headed out on one of our most dangerous parts of the day, our drive home!
Total flight time for todays mission was 4.6 hours covering 493 nautical miles over 6 States. This was Angel Flight Mission number 425 for Captain John and Angel Flight Mission number 295 for myself (Nevin)
Following are some photos of our flight….. hope you enjoy!
