Angel Flight September 19th 2016 (#353)

This flight was down to Raleigh/Durham NC then over to Currituck NC. Total flight time was 4.9hours covering 526 miles… (4.1 hours was in IMC, Instrument Meteorological Conditions)   I (Nevin) was not able to fly with John on this flight as my Sister was scheduled for Gallbladder Surgery this day (Surgery went GREAT !) … There is probably only two reasons I would not fly with John and they are ….. 1)  If I was no longer breathing ….   and    2) Family Matters.  So Our Great Friend and Mechanic, Doug Carlock served as John’s Copilot on this flight.  The following is a Flight Report direct from Captain John Billings……. (Pictures follow the report)

It was a dark and stormy Monday morning. The front passed
LUA leaving fog and rain. Jimmy was just finishing toppng off
the tanks as Doug drove up and completed the pre-flight. Doug
was taking Nevin’s place as copilot as Nevin attended to a family
medical situation.

We taxied to the sweet spot on the north parking ramp and
received our clearance, as filed. We were in the clouds just after
lift off. The front crossed our course at about a 30 degree angle
prior to RDU. The XM weather showed considerable areas of
heavy rain and no lighting strikes on our way, but many west of
the airport. The ADSB Wx loop indicated we should be able to
get into and out of RDU before the worst arrived.
The ATIS reports that the east runway was closed and to expect
an ILS to 25R. We were vectored through the final for
sequencing for a ways before turning west to intercept the
localizer, and cleared for the approach, with a request to
maintain best forward speed for as long as possible. We
maintained 140k till short final. The runway was in sight at about
600 feet.

At TAC Air ramp Doug and I waited under the wing while the
marshal brought us a covered golf cart. We met Char inside and
after a very short social hour, we all boarded the cart, and
headed foe 49B. Two marshals helped with Char’s luggage. We
got our enroute clearance and called for taxi clearance. I read
back taxi routing the 05R.
Even though I had acknowledge the 05R runway, in my mind I
visualized a route to 05L, and asked for routing again. Once my
mind was convinced we were going to the east runway, ground
control said that some airliners had a ground stop for destination
Wx, all the others were waiting for the “t-storm” to pass though,
and asked if we would be waiting as well. I said that if I could
have an easterly heading immediately after take off, I would like
to go now. He said no problem… you will be the only one out
there, and cleared us for take off, turn to 90 degrees. We taxied
past a waiting B737 and left. We were out of the rain after about
two and a half minutes. Departure control promptly gave us a
direct clearance to ONX. The ride was in and out of clouds with
some light turbulence. The runway came in view about 2 miles
west from 2599 feet and completed the visual approach. We
chatted with Char until her ride arrived and, of course, took pictures.

We called for our clearance aloft and was cleared as filed. The
front was now just north of RIC showing a lot of rain. Other
traffic on the frequency, we’re deviating but, our best route was
on course. The home AWAS indicating 1500 foot ceiling, so we
set up for LP+V to 04. It was still raining as Doug put 49B in
the hanger. Doug noted that there was no bugs on the plane !
