Todays Angel Flight took us up to Latrobe PA (Arnold Palmer Regional Airport) and then over to Columbus OH (Port Columbus International Airport) then back to Home Base (Luray Caverns Airport). Flight time totaled out to 5 hours covering 501 nautical miles over 4 States.
Flight conditions on our route up to Latrobe at 6000 feet were clear with a fairly strong headwind component of around 20 knots with light chop as we descended into Latrobe, we landed on runway 23 with fairly light winds from about 210 degrees. We arrived ahead of Angel Flight Pilot James Hogan, James was bringing our Angel Flight Passenger Sheila from Somerset NJ. (This was James 1st Angel Flight …… Congratulations James !)
After our Greetings with Sheila we boarded up and departed Arnold Palmer Regional, heading to Port Columbus International. Flight conditions at 6000 feet on this portion of our flight were clear with a strong headwind component of around 30 knots with light chop. Our approach into Port Columbus was a visual to runway 28L (Parallel runways) with moderate turbulence and crosswinds of around 19 knots gusting to around 28 along with a wind shear advisory on final. Once on the ground with 49Bravo secured we gave our goodbyes (lots of Hugs !) to Sheila and saw her off on her ride (Uber) heading to her appointment.
We departed Port Columbus International after receiving our IFR clearance on runway 28L in some very strong gusting crosswinds that could not make up their minds which way to blow climbing out in some fairly strong chop, eventually climbing to our cruise altitude of 7000 feet where we settled in for our flight home. Flight conditions heading home over the West Virginia Mountains were fairly turbulent occasionally flying thru some lower cloud layers with a nice tailwind component of about 25 knots. During this time we enjoyed our IAP (In Air Picnic) and great conversation !
Once back into our home area our approach into Luray was a visual to runway 22 with a fairly light wind of about 9 knots. After securing 49 Bravo back into her hanger we enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and some hanger conversation with our Airport Manager, Kenny Painter.
I believe most people know how much John and I like to Fly…… but along with that, it is always such a highlight with our Angel Flights to get to meet our passengers….. such strong and courageous individuals that are such an inspiration to all even while dealing with so many different health obstacles. (It makes a person realize what is really important as we travel thru life)……. Thanks Sheila, we are so glad that our paths crossed and we were able to get to know you. Our best of wishes to you and we hope the little puppy brings you much Joy !
